Cockermouth Castle
Privately owned medieval castle at the meeting of the rivers Cocker and Derwent, a major Cockermouth landmark that occasionally opens for organised access.
About Cockermouth Castle
Cockermouth Castle occupies the dramatic point above the confluence of the rivers Cocker and Derwent. A castle was established here in the Norman period and the surviving walls and later buildings remain one of the defining features of the town, visible from several nearby streets and riverside viewpoints.
The important practical point is that Cockermouth Castle is privately owned and is not a normal daily visitor attraction. Public access is occasional, including selected tours or special events, so visitors should never assume that the grounds will be open simply because they are in town.
You can still appreciate the castle from public areas around Castlegate, Brewery Lane and the riverside. When official open days are announced they offer a rare chance to see beyond the walls, but dates and arrangements should always be checked in advance.
Our local note
An essential part of Cockermouth's skyline and history, but plan to view it from public areas unless a specifically advertised open day or tour is running.
