Worth It

This is a historical display, not a tasting session. It is an unusual way to understand everyday food at Townend.

Taste of Townend uses the Browne family's 57-page 17th-century recipe book to recreate historic food displays. Elizabeth Birkett's collection contains food recipes alongside remedies, medicines and household-cleaning instructions. IMPORTANT: the recreated food is for DISPLAY ONLY and cannot be tasted. Real ingredients may contain nuts and flour. The National Trust lists the activity as a free event with normal Townend admission applying; event booking is not required. Current sessions run Thursdays, noon-3pm, through 29 October 2026.

Accessibility

The house has steps, narrow corridors and uneven surfaces. Real food may contain nuts and flour.
