Worth It
One of the more memorable ways to experience Ullswater after dark. Book for the swim itself rather than assuming perfect stars, because the weather is part of the experience.
Another Place's stargazing night swim takes you into Ullswater after dark with open-water swimming specialist Colin Hill. The session is based in the sheltered bay in front of the hotel and includes equipment, a safety briefing and around 20 to 40 minutes in the water.
The experience is advertised all year and currently costs £40 per person. Groups are up to six with a minimum of two participants. The minimum age is 16; 16 and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Another Place describes it as suitable for beginner and experienced swimmers and as an experience rather than a serious distance swim.
For the 2026 Cumbria Dark Skies period, Visit Lake District lists availability from 24 October to 19 November on selected Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with varying times. Cumbria Guru deliberately does not invent individual session times: use the live booking system or contact Another Place before travelling.
The swim goes ahead in most weather conditions. Cloud may remove the stars, but the organiser describes the darkness on Ullswater as part of the experience.
Accessibility
