Worth It
The combination of Luke Jerram's Moon and Carlisle Cathedral's star-painted ceiling makes this a standout autumn 2026 indoor experience.
Luke Jerram's internationally touring Museum of the Moon comes to Carlisle Cathedral from 1 October to 1 November 2026.
The internally lit seven-metre sphere uses detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. In Carlisle it hangs beneath the Cathedral's famous blue-and-gold starry ceiling.
Opening times and admission
Daytime viewing is normally 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday, last entry 4.30pm, and noon-2pm on Sundays around worship. No advance booking is required for ordinary daytime viewing. Admission is by invited voluntary donation, with £5 per adult or £12 per family suggested.
More to see
A South Aisle exhibition explores the Cathedral's relationship with the night sky. The wider programme includes concerts, talks, family activities, late openings and optional at-height Moon View Tours.
Getting there
Use Carlisle city-centre parking and walk to The Abbey. Carlisle railway station and the bus interchange are within walking distance.
