The Caravan Press at Allan Bank 2026

The Caravan Press at Allan Bank explores the life of Gwyneth Alban Davis, who ran a one-woman printing business from a caravan on the Langdale Estate in the late 1940s.

Curated by Tracy Hill and Heather Mullender-Ross, it includes large-format personal photographs, framed prints created from Davis's original blocks, her Jardine printing press and printing activities for adults and children.

Davis arrived in Ambleside for a two-week holiday in 1946 and stayed for four and a half years, joining a creative Langdale community that included Kurt Schwitters and Hilde Goldschmidt.

Dates and price

The current National Trust calendar lists the exhibition on Allan Bank's published opening days through 20 December 2026, normally 10am-4pm. It is free with normal admission and does not require separate booking.

Accessibility

Gallery 2 is on the first floor and accessed by stairs. Contact Allan Bank before travelling if step-free access is essential.

Parking

There is no visitor parking at Allan Bank. Use Grasmere public car parks or public transport, then walk to the property.
