The village developed on routes crossing the Solway Plain and retains a strong community character. Its buildings and local stories reflect the farming and transport history of the area between Carlisle and the western coast.

Thursby is best used as a peaceful base for Carlisle, Watchtree, Wigton, Caldbeck and Bowness-on-Solway. It offers quick road access while remaining outside the city and main Lake District visitor centres.
