The village lies in gentle upland country east of the Lake District, with Orton Scar and surrounding lanes revealing limestone pavements, open views and traces of long human settlement. Its church, food businesses and monthly market add to the local character.

Orton makes a peaceful base for walking, cycling and exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park’s Westmorland section. It is also convenient for Tebay, Shap, Kirkby Stephen and journeys across the A66 corridor.
