The village developed around mining and tourism in a dramatic setting where steep valleys meet the lake. Ullswater Steamers, shoreline paths and views towards the surrounding fells provide plenty for visitors who prefer lower-level days.
For walkers, Glenridding is a major starting point for Helvellyn and routes through the eastern fells. It is also well placed for Aira Force, Patterdale and the Ullswater Way, making it a strong base for a multi-day outdoor break.
