Could ten-pin bowling be coming to Whitehaven? One of the town's established snooker and pool venues has unveiled plans to add a bowling alley, with an ambitious opening target of March 2027.
The Rack Shack on Quay Street wants to install between six and eight full-size ten-pin bowling lanes as part of a wider move towards a multi-activity indoor entertainment venue. It's an idea that could give local families and groups of friends another option when the weather rules out a day outdoors.
There is a catch worth knowing before you start planning a bowling night: the new lanes are proposed, not open, and the project is subject to planning approval. Here's what we know so far.
What is planned at The Rack Shack?
The business already offers snooker, English and American pool, darts and a bar. Owner Scott McKelvey has outlined plans to make better use of currently unused space inside the existing premises rather than create a new standalone bowling centre elsewhere in Whitehaven.
The proposed six to eight bowling lanes would sit behind the current pool tables and darts area. The idea is to give bowling its own seating space and a degree of separation while keeping everything under one roof.
The venue secured a longer-term lease in April 2026, which the owner says has made it possible to consider investing in more substantial improvements. The reported application seeks to change the use of the building from a snooker and pool hall to a broader indoor entertainment venue.
When could bowling open in Whitehaven?
The team hopes to begin installation work in January 2027 and welcome its first bowlers in March 2027, assuming the necessary permissions are secured and the work proceeds to schedule.
March 2027 is a target, not a confirmed opening date. As of 21 October 2026, Cumbria Guru could not independently identify a decision notice or an application reference on the council's public planning pages. The proposed timing and application details come from the owner's account reported on 16 October.
There are no confirmed bowling admission prices, lane booking arrangements, session lengths or opening hours yet. It's far too early to buy tickets or book a bowling lane.
More than bowling: shuffleboard and future activities
The plans may not stop with bowling. The owner has also talked about introducing shuffleboard around the same period, although that hasn't been announced as a confirmed new attraction.
Looking further ahead, crazy golf and table tennis have been mentioned as possible additions in three or four years. Those are ideas for the future, rather than facilities visitors should expect to find at The Rack Shack today.
For now, its existing activities remain the reason to visit. If you're after a game of pool or snooker in Whitehaven, the current venue is separate from the potential bowling development.
Could the new venue create local jobs?
There could be an employment benefit as well. Depending on demand, the owner has suggested that the expansion might create two full-time and three part-time positions.
The installation would need specialist bowling equipment, with a stated intention to make use of local tradespeople where possible. Neither the estimated staffing level nor a recruitment timetable has been confirmed, so jobseekers should wait for official vacancy announcements.
Why the proposals matter for Whitehaven
A bowling alley in the centre of Whitehaven could appeal to more than keen bowlers. It could offer an additional group activity for birthdays, rainy afternoons and evenings out, and potentially encourage people to spend more time in the town centre.
For visitors exploring the Cumbrian coast, an indoor activity is particularly handy when the forecast isn't playing along. Whitehaven already has a harbour, maritime heritage and a variety of places to eat and drink, so another entertainment option could fit into a wider day out.
The proposals also follow previous Rack Shack expansion ambitions in Barrow-in-Furness. That is a separate project and should not be confused with the new Whitehaven plans.
Where is The Rack Shack in Whitehaven?
You'll find the existing venue at 1B Quay Street, Whitehaven, CA28 7LS, close to the town centre and harbour area. The listed telephone number is 01946 696964.
Parking is available in various town-centre and harbour car parks. The Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners' official parking page has details for Quay Street North, Quay Street South and other harbour car parks, including published tariffs and restrictions. Check those before travelling.

Can you book ten-pin bowling at The Rack Shack now?
No. The bowling lanes are not currently available to book. The venue's established snooker, pool and darts offering is a separate matter, and anyone planning a visit should check directly for current playing times, prices and any age restrictions.
What happens next?
The first milestone is the planning process. If permission is granted, the next things to watch will be confirmation of the final number of lanes, installation dates, pricing, booking information and an official opening announcement.
We'll update this article as further details become available. Until then, the fairest way to describe the proposal is an exciting possibility for Whitehaven, rather than an opening that's already in the diary.
