Peel Gill Bridge Closure 2026: B5305 Dates, Diversion & Access

Three-week bridge repairs between Unthank and Sebergham, with the official vehicle diversion and pedestrian access explained.

Checked Tuesday 27 October 2026. A bridge on the B5305 between Unthank and Sebergham in northern Cumbria is scheduled to be closed to ordinary vehicle traffic for up to three weeks from Monday 26 October. Westmorland and Furness Council has announced essential repairs to the stone arch barrels of Peel Gill Bridge. Drivers should follow the official signed diversion, while pedestrians, people wheeling their bicycles and emergency vehicles are expected to retain access under the council's published arrangements.

This guide explains what is confirmed, what is not and how to avoid unnecessary journeys along smaller rural roads. The published start date is not by itself proof that every traffic sign was erected at a particular moment. Check the council update and the live roadworks map before a time-critical journey.

Where is Peel Gill Bridge?

Peel Gill Bridge is on the rural B5305 between Unthank and Sebergham. The bridge crosses a watercourse on a country road rather than on the M6 or A595 trunk route itself. The official notice identifies the B5305 as the affected highway. Do not confuse this closure with the different bridge repair programme announced for Ullock on the C2030 near Cockermouth.

Because this is a rural road, the diversion may be much longer than the direct journey. The correct route depends on which direction you are travelling and which signposts are active on the day. Businesses, farms and properties on either side of the works may still be reachable from their own side, but their individual access has not been verified. Contact a destination directly if precise arrival directions matter.

Why does a masonry repair require a full vehicle closure?

The bridge needs specialist work to the stonework forming its arch barrels. Westmorland and Furness Council says the contractor must position site vehicles, an under-bridge access unit, building materials and mixing equipment on the bridge. There would not be enough safe room for normal traffic to pass around that operation. The closure is therefore about working space and protecting both the bridge structure and the people using it, rather than a general closure of the surrounding district.

Official B5305 diversion: roads to follow

The council lists the following signed diversion corridor: A595 → Carlisle Southern Bypass → A6 → C3012 → open sections of the B5305. The direction of the sequence will depend on your approach. Follow the temporary signs where they differ from a saved sat-nav route; a mapping app may suggest minor lanes that are not suitable for through traffic or large vehicles.

Do not use private tracks, field access, narrow lanes or driveways as a way around a full bridge closure. Do not assume the diversion is appropriate for every unusual-size vehicle without checking height, weight or width restrictions on its route.

Can you cross Peel Gill Bridge on foot or bicycle?

According to the council announcement, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be allowed through during the scheme. That means cyclists may need to get off and walk their bicycles; it does not mean the worksite is open for normal riding. Follow the instructions of workers and temporary signs. If site conditions require a short pause or controlled access, allow time for that.

The same announcement states that emergency-service access will be maintained. This is different from Ullock Bridge, where the council's later announcement describes no access at all through its construction site.

Travelling between northern Cumbrian villages

The B5305 is used for rural journeys, local services and travel between smaller communities. If your trip involves Wigton or wider routes towards Carlisle, double-check which junction provides access to your destination without crossing the bridge. Not everyone in nearby villages will need the entire official detour; equally, the shortest road on a map may be unsuitable.

Anyone arranging deliveries, accommodation arrival, taxis or a booked activity should send the closure information to their provider in advance. For public transport, confirm the current bus operator's route rather than presuming a diversion or cancellation that the council has not published.

What should drivers check before travelling?

  1. Confirm the B5305 closure is still active and that the scheme has not been brought forward or delayed.
  2. Follow the council's signed diversion rather than taking a narrow unsignposted shortcut.
  3. Allow extra journey time for local and farm traffic on the diversion roads.
  4. Confirm the access side of any farm stay, rural business or appointment close to the bridge.
  5. Use the official bridge-repair announcement and live roadworks map for last-minute changes.

When will Peel Gill Bridge reopen?

The council estimates up to three weeks after 26 October. That is a provisional construction duration, not a confirmed reopening date. It would be misleading to guarantee that traffic resumes on a calculated date without a follow-up statement from the road authority.

Frequently asked questions

Is the B5305 closed to all vehicles?

The council says ordinary through traffic cannot cross Peel Gill Bridge during the repairs. Emergency-service access is expressly maintained in the published notice.

Can pedestrians still cross?

The council says pedestrians and dismounted cyclists retain access; follow worksite instructions and current signage.

Which diversion roads are officially listed?

The A595, Carlisle Southern Bypass, A6, C3012 and unrestricted B5305 sections. Check the signs for your travel direction.

Is the closure the same as Ullock Bridge?

No. Peel Gill is on the B5305 between Unthank and Sebergham; Ullock is a separate C2030 scheme with more restrictive access plans.

Will it definitely reopen in three weeks?

Three weeks is the published maximum anticipated repair window, not a confirmed time for removal of the closure.
