Helm Crag

Helm Crag is the unmistakable rocky fell rising north of Grasmere. Its summit profile is traditionally known as the Lion and the Lamb, and the fell has become one of the village’s signature landscapes as well as a favourite introduction to Lake District hillwalking.

The National Trust suggests a roughly 3.5-mile (6 km) outing. The ascent is moderately steep on established paths before the terrain becomes rockier near the top. Wide views open across Grasmere, Easedale and the surrounding fells, making the effort feel disproportionally rewarding for a relatively compact walk.

The upper rocks can be slippery in wet weather and the summit area is rough, so this is not a casual paved viewpoint. Check the forecast, carry appropriate clothing and navigation, and turn back if conditions deteriorate. Grasmere is the practical starting point, with public parking and regular bus services in the village.
