About Brambles at Newton Rigg
Brambles at Newton Rigg is a forthcoming café bar, restaurant and deli at Newton Rigg Estate near Penrith. The revived venue is due to open in autumn 2026 as part of the ongoing regeneration of the former Newton Rigg College campus. Brambles was once a familiar social hub for students, staff and visitors to the agricultural college. Its return gives the historic name a new public role and reconnects the wider community with one of the estate's best-remembered spaces. The official Newton Rigg Estate plans describe a welcoming café-restaurant serving breakfast, relaxed lunches, good coffee, homemade cakes and evening meals. It is intended for local residents, visitors exploring the northern Lake District, people working on the estate and guests staying in the estate's accommodation.

A deli is planned as part of the offer, with locally sourced produce alongside food prepared by the Brambles kitchen. The operators have previously sought regional growers, bakers, food makers and other suppliers, pointing towards a strong local-produce focus. Brambles is also planned as a flexible gathering and event venue. Announced uses include funeral teas, family celebrations, birthday lunches, small receptions, private hire and catering for groups. Specific capacities, menus, minimum spends and booking terms have not yet been published. A significant step towards opening was confirmed in summer 2026 when Westmorland and Furness Council listed an application for the grant of a premises licence under the name "Brambles Cafe Bar, Restaurant & Deli, Newton Rigg, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 0AH". The public consultation period is listed as ending on 13 August 2026. A licence application is evidence that preparations are progressing, but it should not be treated as confirmation that the licence has been granted or that the venue is already open. As checked on 7 August 2026, Newton Rigg Estate's official visitor information continues to state an autumn 2026 opening. A final public launch date, regular opening hours, full menus, prices and restaurant reservation arrangements have not yet been released, so visitors should not travel expecting Brambles to be trading yet. Newton Rigg Estate is north of Penrith and close to Junction 40 of the M6 and the A66. The wider estate includes parking, accommodation, business premises and leisure facilities. Restaurant-specific parking, accessibility, dog policies and evening access should be confirmed when the final opening information is published.
Our local note
A promising revival of a well-known Newton Rigg name. The licence application is a useful sign of progress, but Brambles remains officially scheduled for autumn 2026 and is not yet open.
