Clifton is a small Eden village known for its connection to the 1745 Jacobite rising, with countryside walks and easy access to Penrith, Lowther and Ullswater.
The village and nearby Clifton Moor were the scene of a rear-guard action during the Jacobite retreat, often described as the last battle fought on English soil between English and Scottish forces. Memorials and local landmarks preserve that story.
Clifton’s position just south of Penrith also makes it a convenient base for Lowther Castle, the River Lowther, Eamont Bridge and the northern approach to the Lake District. The surrounding landscape is gentle, rural and easy to combine with a wider Eden itinerary.
