The town rises from the River Eden towards its historic upper streets, with traditional shops, sandstone buildings and strong links to the former county of Westmorland. A riverside walk reveals a quieter side of Appleby and makes an easy introduction to the surrounding valley.
Appleby is well placed for day trips into the Eden Valley, Dufton, High Cup Nick and the eastern fells. Its railway connection also makes it a useful stop on the Settle to Carlisle line and a good base for visitors who want countryside without Lake District crowds.
