Book Review: Outdoor adventures with children - Lake District

Pitched as an outdoor adventure guidebook for families with children under 12, this pocket sized beauty is just what we’ve needed this summer.

Here at Cumbria Guru HQ, we have the conundrum of wanting to create amazing memories, but not wanting to spend much money (desperately trying to save, anyone?).

We were very happy when Rachel Crolla and Carl McKeating’s book (Outdoor Adventures with Children - Lake District) landed on our doormat, and were keen to get started. Pitched as an outdoor adventure guidebook for families with children under 12, this pocket sized beauty is just what we’ve needed this summer.

It details 40 “unforgettable family adventures” covering hiking, scrambling and water activities. We’re definite novices when it comes to such things, but we’re a family who are desperate to get out and about and make the most of this spectacular county. It’s introduced us to Wray Castle, Claife Viewing Station (Adventure 8) and Tarn Hows (Adventure 3). The guide is comprehensive but clear, and the addition of OS Maps is very useful.

Upon first glance, the guidebook is perfect for all of the family, but some of the activities are quite advanced- especially for a family like us who are starting out in our life as outdoor adventurers! My recommendation would be to start with the green routes and to read the guide carefully and thoroughly. Don’t be put off if some of the adventures seem a bit much- the writers of the guide are professional outdoor writers and photographers! Their suggestions do open your eyes and make you realise just what you (and your children) are capable of!

Before starting researching outdoor adventures, I would never have thought that we’d spend our weekends tackling the Wainwrights or scrambling down gills, but that’s what we do now! I think next on our list would involve exploring more of the southern Lakes by tackling Gummer’s How (Adventure 9) or staying in a bothy for the night. Whatever we do, this book will definitely be our own guru!

Outdoor Adventures with Children - Lake District was kindly gifted by Cicerone for this honest review.
