St Oswald's Church, Grasmere

St Oswald’s Church stands beside the River Rothay at the heart of Grasmere and is one of the village’s most important historic places. The parish describes it as a medieval church on a seventh-century Christian site, continuing a tradition of worship here that reaches back more than a thousand years.

Its international significance comes from the Wordsworth family graves in the churchyard. William Wordsworth is buried here with his wife Mary, sister Dorothy and other family members, making the site a natural continuation of a visit to Dove Cottage and Wordsworth Grasmere. The neighbouring Wordsworth Daffodil Garden adds another quiet place to pause beside the river.
