Scale Force
Dramatic waterfall in a narrow gorge above Crummock Water, reached on foot from Buttermere and commonly described as the Lake District's tallest single-drop waterfall.
About Scale Force
Scale Force is hidden in a rocky gorge on the western side of Crummock Water and is one of the natural highlights of the Buttermere Valley. The National Trust gives its main single drop as around 170 ft (51.8 m).
From the National Trust Buttermere car park, allow roughly two hours for the return visit. It can also be incorporated into longer routes around Crummock Water or towards Red Pike.

The final approach deserves respect. The National Trust warns that getting closer to the falls involves scrambling over a large boulder which is often slippery with moss. For many visitors, the safer viewpoint from the footbridge is the better option, especially after rain.
Wear appropriate footwear, keep children close near steep or slippery ground and do not treat the gorge as a casual swimming spot.
Our local note
A superb natural detour from Buttermere, but the wet, rocky gorge makes sensible footwear and judgement essential.
