RSPB Hodbarrow Nature Reserve
Free 24-hour RSPB nature reserve on Millom's former iron-mining coast, with a lagoon, sea wall, bird hide, accessible surfaced paths and views across the Duddon Estuary.
About RSPB Hodbarrow Nature Reserve
RSPB Hodbarrow is one of the strongest reasons to visit Millom. The reserve occupies a remarkable former iron-mining landscape beside the Duddon Estuary, where a large lagoon and sea wall now support important birdlife.
The reserve is open 24 hours and admission is free. The RSPB car park is at the end of Mainsgate Road. A 1.5-mile (2.5 km) rolled-stone route leads towards the hide without gates, steps or stiles, and other paths have been improved for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

There is seating around the reserve and a picnic bench at the end of the sea wall. There are currently no public toilets, café, shop or staffed visitor centre on the reserve; the RSPB directs visitors to facilities in Haverigg or Millom.
Dogs are permitted but the RSPB asks that they are kept on a lead at all times because the reserve is an important breeding and resting site for wildlife.
The wider Hodbarrow landscape is changing through the Millom Town Deal Iron Line project. Plans include a new visitor centre and café, accessible toilets, improved walking and cycling routes, wildlife viewing areas and heritage interpretation. Until those facilities actually open, visitors should rely on the current RSPB information rather than assuming the planned visitor centre is available.
Our local note
Millom's standout outdoor attraction: wildlife, industrial history and big coastal views in one free reserve, with a surprisingly accessible route to the hide.
