About Northern Problems
Northern Problems is a new independent bouldering gym at Haig Enterprise Park in Kells, Whitehaven. It officially opened on 30 June 2026, filling a significant gap for indoor climbing and wet-weather activities in West Cumbria. Bouldering is low-height, rope-free climbing above specialist safety matting. Northern Problems has approximately 200 square metres of climbing wall and around 80 square metres of matting, with regularly changing problems intended for complete beginners as well as experienced climbers. The wall was created by climbers Iain Bisset and Kat Von Goldacker with an intentionally welcoming, boutique feel. New climbers can ask about beginner introductions and quieter sessions, while experienced visitors can normally climb independently after completing the required registration and safety process. The current adult day pass is £10.50 and climbing-shoe hire is £3.

Shoe hire is included with admission for under-14s under the published launch pricing. Prices, memberships, concessions and session requirements may change, so check the official website before travelling. Children and young people are welcome, but under-14s require constant supervision. Parents and guardians should read the current participation rules and confirm whether advance booking, ratios or introductory sessions apply to their group. A café-bar serves coffee, cake and locally brewed beer, making the venue suitable for social visits as well as climbing. Alcohol should only be consumed after climbing, and visitors remain responsible for following the gym's current safety policies. The published summer schedule runs until 8 September 2026: Monday noon to 6pm; Tuesday and Wednesday noon to 9pm; Thursday 9am to 9pm; Friday and Saturday noon to 9pm; and Sunday noon to 7pm. Check for revised autumn hours before making a special journey after that date. Northern Problems is based within Haig Enterprise Park near Whitehaven's historic harbour and coastal path. Parking and public-transport arrangements should be checked before travelling, particularly during busy events at the wider site.
