Millom Castle
Grade I listed medieval castle and moated manor beside Holy Trinity Church, incorporating ruins, a gatehouse and later farmhouse buildings.
About Millom Castle
Millom Castle is a nationally important medieval site beside Holy Trinity Church. Historic England records a licence to crenellate from 1335, a later fourteenth-century east range and a great tower that was subsequently incorporated into a farmhouse.
The ruined portions are also protected as a scheduled monument. Surviving features include the gatehouse, traces of the hall, kitchen and solar ranges, cellars and sections of the moat.
This should be treated as a heritage landmark rather than a conventional visitor attraction. Historic England notes that listed and scheduled sites are not necessarily open to the public. Do not enter private land or buildings without permission. The neighbouring public road and Holy Trinity Church provide context for the site.
Our local note
Historically fascinating, but primarily a heritage landmark rather than a turn-up-and-tour attraction. Pair it with Holy Trinity Church and respect private access.
