Crummock Water
Long, dramatic lake immediately north-west of Buttermere, framed by Grasmoor and Mellbreak and giving access to Scale Force, Rannerdale and Lanthwaite Wood.
About Crummock Water
Crummock Water is the large lake immediately north-west of Buttermere and an essential part of the wider Buttermere Valley. It is linked to Buttermere by Buttermere Dubs and surrounded by some of the western Lake District's most dramatic scenery.
Lanthwaite Wood is one of the easiest approaches to the shore, with the National Trust describing a roughly half-mile level walk from its car park to a striking view along the lake. Other popular nearby objectives include Scale Force and Rannerdale.
Parking is limited and roadside congestion can be severe in peak periods. Use designated car parks and check current National Trust guidance before planning boating, paddleboarding or other water activities because conservation restrictions and permit arrangements can change.
Our local note
More than an add-on to Buttermere: Crummock Water has superb shoreline views, quieter walking and direct access to Scale Force and Rannerdale.
