Bassenthwaite Lake Station

Cafe and special events venue

  • About this place

A beautifully restored Victorian railway stop on the former Cockermouth–Keswick–Penrith line, Bassenthwaite Lake Station is now a standout train-themed café and restaurant set a few minutes from the A66. The star attraction is a full-size steam locomotive with period dining carriages, a film-quality replica that gives you the theatre of classic rail travel with Lake District views of Skiddaw, Dodd Wood and Bassenthwaite Lake. Whether you drop in for coffee after a stroll or book a table for a special meal in the carriages, it’s a unique Lake District experience.

Inside the old station building you’ll find a relaxed café serving brunch, lunch, cakes and afternoon treats, with a menu built around local Cumbrian produce (think hearty sandwiches, seasonal specials and excellent coffee). On selected services the dining car steps up the occasion with multi-course menus and a touch of vintage glamour, perfect for birthdays, date nights and family celebrations. There’s plenty of outdoor seating on the former platform for sunny days, plus photo-worthy details from heritage signage to luggage trolleys.

Walkers and families use the station as a base for easy local adventures: shoreline paths by Bassenthwaite Lake, woodland trails in Dodd Wood, and nearby spots like Mirehouse & Gardens. It’s equally handy for a picturesque refuel if you’re touring the northern Lakes between Keswick and Cockermouth.
