Taste Cumbria Cockermouth returns on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026, filling the heart of Cockermouth with food, drink, local producers and free entertainment.

This is the flagship event in the Taste Cumbria calendar and one of the biggest food festivals in the county. The festival began in Cockermouth in 2010 as part of efforts to support the town following the devastating 2009 floods, and it has grown into a major annual weekend for visitors, independent traders and local businesses.

What is happening at Taste Cumbria Cockermouth 2026?

The confirmed 2026 festival line-up includes producers' stalls, a street party on Market Place, a drinks tent and outdoor picnic area with live music, a hot food court, cookery demonstrations, fairground rides and children's activities.

The event is spread through Cockermouth town centre, with Main Street and Market Place at the heart of the festival. It is designed as a walk-around event, so allow several hours rather than expecting everything to be contained in one showground.

Is Taste Cumbria Cockermouth free?

Yes. The organisers say the core festival programme is free to attend. You can browse the producers' market and enjoy the general entertainment without buying an admission ticket.

You will pay for food, drinks, shopping and fairground rides. A small number of special events may also be separately ticketed. Those ticketed 2026 events had not yet been announced when this listing was updated.

Food and drink

Expect a mix of Cumbrian producers, specialist food businesses, street-food traders and drinks sellers alongside Cockermouth's permanent cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops.

At the 2024 Cockermouth event, traders and town businesses together reported selling more than 2,000 Scotch eggs, around 2,200 sausage rolls, three quarters of a tonne of Cumberland sausage and about 2,500 scones.

Family activities

Taste Cockermouth is intended as an all-age event rather than a food trade show. Children's activities and fairground rides are part of the confirmed 2026 line-up, while live music and the outdoor picnic area provide places to pause between the food stalls.

The streets can become very busy, particularly around lunchtime. Families with younger children may find it easier to arrive earlier in the day before the busiest periods.

The festival dates are confirmed as Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026. A public event listing gives a 10am start on Saturday, but the organisers have not yet published the complete 2026 daily timetable, closing times, music schedule, demonstration programme or separately ticketed events.

Where is Taste Cumbria Cockermouth?

The festival takes place in central Cockermouth, principally around Main Street and Market Place, Cockermouth, Cumbria CA13 9LE.

This is one of the event's biggest strengths: you are visiting the town itself, not an isolated festival field. Make time for Cockermouth's independent shops and hospitality businesses as well as the temporary festival stalls.

Parking for Taste Cumbria

Do not expect to park immediately beside Main Street. Taste Cumbria attracts thousands of visitors and central parking can become busy early.

Sullart Street Car Park is a useful long-stay council option with 62 general spaces. Current council charges are £1 for up to 30 minutes, £1.60 for one hour, £3.10 for two hours, £4.90 for four hours, £5.20 for six hours and £5.70 for up to 12 hours. Payment is available by cash, card, contactless or MiPermit using location number 712226.

Fairfield Car Park on South Street has 182 general spaces and six disabled spaces but is short stay, with a two-hour maximum. It is therefore better suited to shorter town visits than spending most of the day at the festival.

The organiser also points visitors towards Cockermouth's other public car parks. If you use roadside parking, read the signs carefully. Some disc-parking spaces require a timing disc, available from local businesses.

Getting to Cockermouth by public transport

Cockermouth does not have a railway station. The nearest mainline station is Penrith, with onward bus connections to Cockermouth taking around an hour. Another option from the north is to travel by train to Carlisle, continue by rail to Workington and then use the X4 or X5 bus or a taxi to Cockermouth.

If you are travelling by car from the M6, leave at Junction 40 and follow the A66 west towards Cockermouth. The organisers estimate the journey from the motorway at around 40 minutes in normal traffic. Give yourself considerably more time on festival weekend.

Accessibility

This is a town-centre street festival rather than a single purpose-built venue, so surfaces, gradients, crowds and temporary layouts vary. Fairfield Car Park has six marked disabled spaces and is listed by Cumberland Council as wheelchair accessible.

If you need to avoid the busiest crowds, consider arriving early. For a specific access requirement at a ticketed demonstration or special event, check directly with the organiser before booking.

What happens if it rains?

The main festival is outdoors and Cumbria in late September can deliver almost any weather. Bring a waterproof layer and suitable footwear. Outdoor performances or individual activities can be altered for safety if conditions deteriorate.

Why Taste Cumbria matters to Cockermouth

Independent research found that the 2025 flagship Cockermouth festival generated around £2.1 million for the Cumberland economy. The 2024 event attracted more than 25,000 visitors and generated an estimated £2.2 million.

That economic impact is one reason to explore beyond the festival stalls. Eating in a town restaurant, buying from an independent shop or staying locally helps spread the benefit through Cockermouth.
