Wastwater lies beneath the great screes, leading towards Wasdale Head and the highest fells. Small farms, historic inns and St Olaf’s Church sit within a landscape that feels much more isolated than its map distance suggests.
The valley attracts experienced walkers, climbers, photographers and visitors who simply want to see Wastwater from safe roadside or lakeside viewpoints. Lower-level paths and short heritage stops offer alternatives to attempting Scafell Pike.

Late spring to early autumn offers the easiest access; experienced visitors can enjoy quieter seasons when weather and road conditions are suitable.
Plan it well
Roads are narrow, parking is limited and phone signal can be poor. Scafell Pike is a serious mountain route, not a casual walk. Check forecasts, carry navigation and full equipment, and use seasonal shuttles where available.
Getting there
Wasdale is reached by minor roads from Gosforth and the A595. Seascale and Ravenglass are the nearest rail stations, but onward transport is limited and should be arranged in advance.
